What is MOTS-c?

MOTS-c is a peptide of 16 amino acids encoded in mitochondrial DNA, in a region called 12S rRNA, which is why it is described as a mitochondrial-derived peptide. In animal studies it acts on muscle, helping it respond to insulin and use glucose. That is why it is studied for metabolism, insulin resistance, weight and healthy aging.

MOTS-c is not FDA-approved. This is educational, not medical advice; results vary and are not guaranteed. See the important information at the end of this page.

MOTS-c benefits

People use MOTS-c to support metabolism, insulin sensitivity, weight management, energy and exercise capacity. In mice, it helped prevent weight gain and insulin resistance on a high-fat diet, and improved physical performance in young and older animals. It has not yet been studied in people, so your provider tells you what to realistically expect.

How does MOTS-c work?

Most proteins are coded in the DNA of a cell's nucleus; MOTS-c is coded in the separate DNA inside mitochondria, the parts of a cell that make energy. In animal studies it acts on muscle, helping it respond to insulin and take up glucose. Researchers are still learning how that applies to people.

Does MOTS-c help with weight loss?

It is studied for it. In mice, MOTS-c helped prevent weight gain on a high-fat diet, but it has not been tested for weight loss in people. If weight is your main goal, ask your provider about our personalized compounded semaglutide, personalized compounded tirzepatide and phentermine programs too.

How is MOTS-c taken?

By injection under the skin, as your provider prescribes. Your provider gives you instructions for your exact prescription, and you never change the amount or schedule yourself.

MOTS-c side effects and safety

Its safety in people is not yet known, because it has not been studied in people. Injected peptides can trigger immune reactions, so your provider reviews your history first and asks you to report anything new right away.

Is MOTS-c FDA-approved?

No. MOTS-c is not FDA-approved for any use. Your prescription is compounded for you by a state-licensed pharmacy, which prepares it for one patient; FDA does not review compounded drugs before they reach patients. The important information at the end of this page has the details.

Can I get MOTS-c legally?

Yes, with a prescription. Under a 2026 federal policy, state-licensed pharmacies can compound MOTS-c for an individual patient's prescription. The route we offer is a visit with a licensed provider and, if MOTS-c fits, a prescription filled by one of those pharmacies.

Is MOTS-c banned in sports?

Yes. MOTS-c is listed as a prohibited substance, among hormone and metabolic modulators, under the World Anti-Doping Agency's list. Tested athletes should not use it.

Important information

MOTS-c is not FDA-approved for any use. It is prescribed only after a visit with a licensed provider, and compounded for that patient by a state-licensed pharmacy. Compounded drugs are not reviewed by FDA for safety, effectiveness or quality before they reach patients. Pharmacies may compound MOTS-c under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' enforcement discretion policy of October 30, 2026; that policy is not an FDA approval, and HHS may revisit it if a safety or quality problem arises. FDA's July 2026 review found no information on the use of MOTS-c in people, said the relevance of the animal findings to humans is unknown, and could not rule out immune reactions. MOTS-c is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency's list. This page is educational and is not medical advice. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
