Testosterone Therapy (TRT) for Dunnellon

Yes, and for Dunnellon men it starts with bloodwork, not a prescription. Padgett Medical Center offers lab-guided testosterone replacement therapy in person at our Ocala clinic, about 25 miles up US 41 and SR 40, or by telehealth from home. Sarah Weir, APRN, reviews your labs, sets the plan from them, then rechecks labs and blood pressure as treatment continues.

For Dunnellon patients

From $199/month

  • Lab testing comes first.
  • Your plan, and its cost, follow your labs.
  • In person in Ocala or by telehealth.

Your provider: Sarah Weir, APRN.

Testosterone replacement therapy at Padgett starts at $199 a month. Treat that as a starting point, because labs come first: once your provider reviews them, the plan they point to sets your actual cost. At Padgett, testosterone is given by injection, and it is a prescription medication and a Schedule III controlled substance. Testosterone replacement therapy in Ocala covers the medically supervised program in full.

What is the first step if you think your testosterone is low?

Morning bloodwork. The Endocrine Society's 2018 guideline says to diagnose low testosterone only in men with symptoms and signs of it whose levels are unequivocally and consistently low, measured on two separate fasting mornings. If your day starts before dawn on a job site, a farm or an early shift, plan your lab mornings around it.

Why can't symptoms alone answer the question?

Because the usual ones are nonspecific, meaning they are not unique to low testosterone. The guideline's list of nonspecific symptoms includes low energy and motivation, poor concentration and memory, sleep disturbance and feeling sad or blue, and it recommends against routinely screening men in the general population. Your provider weighs your results with your history and medications.

How common is depression among Dunnellon adults, and why does it come up?

About one adult in five has been diagnosed with it at some point. CDC's PLACES project estimates that in 2023, 20.5% of Dunnellon adults had been told by a health professional that they have a depressive disorder, versus 19.0% across Marion County. That covers men and women, at any point in life, and says nothing about testosterone. It comes up because a depressed mood is also on the guideline's nonspecific list, so mood alone settles nothing. If low mood ever turns into thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Who should not start testosterone therapy?

It is not for men trying to father a child. The Endocrine Society also advises against starting it in men with breast or prostate cancer, a prostate lump or high PSA (a prostate blood test) not yet checked by a urologist, an elevated hematocrit, untreated severe obstructive sleep apnea, severe urinary symptoms, uncontrolled heart failure, a heart attack or stroke in the past six months, or a tendency to form blood clots. Your provider goes through each with you first.

Is getting older a reason to start TRT?

Not by itself, retired or not. The FDA says testosterone products are approved only for men who lack or have low testosterone in conjunction with an associated medical condition, such as testicles that stop producing it after chemotherapy, and that none is approved for low testosterone without one. The Endocrine Society suggests against routinely prescribing it to all men 65 or older with low levels. For men over 65 with symptoms and consistently low morning results, it suggests offering it case by case, after discussing the risks and benefits.

What do follow-up labs and blood pressure checks watch for?

Your testosterone level, plus two known effects of treatment. In 2025 the FDA said the ambulatory blood pressure studies it required confirmed an increase in blood pressure with all testosterone products, and it called for a new blood pressure warning on labels that lacked one. The Endocrine Society links testosterone to a dose-dependent rise in hemoglobin, and its monitoring plan measures testosterone and hematocrit, a measure of red blood cells, and checks prostate cancer risk. Your provider decides when to recheck and adjusts the dose from those results.

What did the TRAVERSE trial find about heart risk?

No increase in major heart events, with other risks worth knowing. TRAVERSE, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2023, enrolled 5,246 men aged 45 to 80 who had cardiovascular disease or a high risk of it, plus symptoms and two fasting testosterone results under 300 ng/dL. A cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke occurred in 7.0% of the testosterone group and 7.3% of the placebo group. Atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism and acute kidney injury were more common with testosterone.

Where can you hike, ride or fish east of Dunnellon?

Try Hálpata Tastanaki Preserve, 8,146 acres of Southwest Florida Water Management District land east of town, with roughly 17 miles of multiuse trails, about 13 of them open to bikes and horses, and bank fishing on the Withlacoochee River. The Pruitt Trailhead is reached from the CR 484 entrance. Hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, and the district posts scheduled hunt closures, so check first.

What about horses, hunting and longer rides?

Goethe State Forest, mostly in Levy County, keeps its headquarters at a Dunnellon address on County Road 337 and spreads over 76,162 acres with seven trailheads. Riders need proof of a current negative Coggins test for each horse. Ross Prairie State Forest, about 10 miles southwest of Ocala, has its main trailhead on SR 200 a mile south of CR 484, plus the 2.3-mile Holly Hammock Trail and 15 miles of equestrian trails. FWC lists it as a supervised small-game hunt area where only hunters under 16 and their adult supervisor may hunt.

TRT questions from Dunnellon

Do I have to drive to Ocala for TRT?

Not for your provider visits: those can happen by telehealth from home in Dunnellon, provided you are physically in Florida during each one. When you call (352) 369-0104 to book, ask how labs and medication work for telehealth patients. Or come in to the Ocala clinic whenever you prefer a face-to-face visit.

Can I start TRT if I still want to have kids?

Not while you are trying to father a child. The Endocrine Society recommends against testosterone therapy for men planning fertility in the near term because it suppresses sperm production, and MedlinePlus says it may lower sperm count. Raise your family plans at the first visit.

Is TRT the same as treatment for erectile dysfunction?

No. Testosterone therapy is for low testosterone confirmed by labs, and erectile dysfunction gets its own evaluation. If erections are part of why you are asking, tell your provider, who can evaluate it; erectile dysfunction treatment explains that service at Padgett.

What should I bring to my first TRT visit?

Bring a list of your medications and supplements, any recent lab results from another doctor, and home blood pressure readings if you take them. Be ready to discuss your heart, prostate and sleep apnea history and any plans for children, since each one bears on whether testosterone is right for you.
